System Administrator

VenU (www.ven-u.com) is a fast growing eLearning solution provider to major corporations and is looking for a talented and reliable Systems/Network Administrator with LAMP Programming Skills.

Description: Support and maintain server clusters hosting the company's internal and external web presence. Troubleshoot system and network related problems and optimize configurations for best performance and security. Coordinate with and support software developers to maintain environment as needed for optimal deployment of new websites and updates to existing sites. Provide timely resolution to advanced level support issues raised by developers and customers.

Required Skills:

  • Extensive/Expert knowledge of Linux system administration (specifically RHEL/CentOS 5 and 6) and remote system management using SSH and/or VPN
  • Expert familiarity with standard Linux editing, text manipulation, and search tools (grep/sed/awk/vim/cat/etc.)
  • Experience configuring services and init scripts, and monitoring resource utilization of running processes
  • Ability to quickly assess the health and availability of critical system components
  • Thorough knowledge of TCP/IP routing, basic network principles, OSI model, protocols, client/server architectures, and network issue troubleshooting
  • Network and host management, IP assignment, DNS configuration (BIND), and firewall/iptables configuration
  • Knowledge of best practices in regards to security/encryption and service configuration (SSL, SFTP, password management, access restrictions, firewalls, ports, etc.)
  • Apache and MySQL configuration and performance tuning
  • Experience supporting server architectures for business class PHP web applications
  • Basic to advanced knowledge and experience with PHP web development (best practices, problem resolution, code analysis)
  • Basic to advanced knowledge of SQL and SQL queries (specifically MySQL)
  • Shell/FTP/Usergroup account and permissions management
  • Automation and scripting (shell, Perl, PHP, or Python)
  • Source code and project management using SVN
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills

    • Desired Skills:

  • Experience with Nagios system monitoring
  • Hardware component monitoring with DELL OMSA software
  • Basic Windows Server administration skills and knowledge
  • RPM management skills and occasional custom RPM generation (source patching)
  • Server backup management with rsync
  • Experience with Single Sign-On (SSO) integrations (SAML)
  • Understanding of processes to support UTF8 storage and localization for multi-language applications
  • JavaScript/CSS/HTML and related front end web development skills
  • Java server application development
  • Experience supporting streaming video server applications and configuration
  • Antivirus server configuration (Windows and Linux)
  • System and process log file analysis skills
  • Postfix configuration experience/skills
  • Cron configuration experience/skills


    • Location: US East Coast/Canada
    • Compensation: Highly Competitive Hourly - 1099
